Ruger Mark II with Original box and manual

The Ruger Mark series began with the original “Standard” model in 1949 (Ruger’s first firearm), inspired by the Japanese Nambu pistol’s lines and the Luger’s grip angle. It was a simple, reliable, inexpensive blowback .22 LR semi-auto that quickly became popular for plinking, target shooting, and small-game hunting. A Target variant (Mark I) with heavier barrels and adjustable sights followed in 1951.​

Production of the original Standard/Mark I ended in 1982. The Mark II (1982–2005) was the updated successor. Key improvements included:

Last-round bolt hold-open

Magazine disconnect safety

Redesigned magazine (10-round capacity, up from 9)

Improved safety that allowed loading/unloading with the safety engaged

Availability in stainless steel as well as blued finish

Standard models typically came with tapered lightweight barrels (common lengths 4¾" or 6") and fixed sights. Target models offered heavier/bull or tapered barrels (including 5½", 6⅞", etc.) with adjustable sights. This is the Mark II Standard configuration: 6" tapered barrel, fixed sights, blued finish, and checkered black synthetic grips with the Ruger eagle medallion.
