The Sako L579 Forester Heavy Barrel Varmint in .243 Winchester is a classic Finnish bolt-action rifle from the 1960s–1980s, renowned for its precision craftsmanship, accuracy, and durability—especially prized by varmint hunters, bench shooters, and collectors.

Key Specifications

Action: L579 mid-length bolt-action (smooth, reliable, with Mauser-style claw extractor).

Caliber: .243 Win (ideal for varmints like coyotes, prairie dogs; also deer/antelope).

Barrel: Heavy/varmint profile (bull or thick contour for sustained accuracy/heat resistance); 23–24 inches long; 1:10 twist (stabilizes 55–107gr bullets); often Bofors steel (Swedish oil-hardened, ultra-durable—highly sought after).

Weight: ~8.5–9.5 lbs (heavy barrel adds ~1 lb/500g over standard).

Stock: Walnut (checkered Monte Carlo with beavertail forend for stability); some laminated; hard buttplate (add pad for comfort).

Capacity: Internal magazine (3–5 rounds); hinged floorplate (top-load option).

Sights: Iron (hooded front blade, adjustable rear); drilled/tapped for scopes (integral bases common).

Finish: Blued steel; high-polish walnut.

Production: ~1960–1992; heavy barrel "Varmint" variant is rarer/collectible.

This rifle is topped with a Redfield 8x scope.
