Savage Model 1899 – .30-30 Winchester – 1904 Manufacture – Peep Sight – Early Lever Action
Early-production Savage Model 1899 lever-action rifle chambered in .30-30 Winchester, manufactured in 1904. This is a particularly attractive turn-of-the-century Savage that retains its classic configuration and presents exceptionally well for a rifle more than 120 years old.
The rifle features the distinctive Savage hammerless lever-action design with rotary magazine, round barrel, walnut forearm and buttstock, and checkered pistol-grip wrist. It retains its original-style metal buttplate and is equipped with a period-style tang-mounted folding peep sight, an especially desirable setup on an early Model 1899.
Metal surfaces have aged to an attractive gray/brown patina with areas of original finish remaining. Most notably, the lever still displays visible traces of case coloring, a nice feature on a rifle of this age. The receiver shows honest age and handling wear without the appearance of heavy abuse.
The walnut furniture is in excellent used condition for its age. The wood has an attractive warm color with crisp checkering and only normal handling marks. There are no major gouges, cracks, or significant dings visible. Wood-to-metal fit remains attractive throughout.
The barrel is clearly marked “.30-30” and “Savage Hi-Pressure Steel – Model 1899.” The rifle retains the graceful lines and excellent handling characteristics that made the Model 1899 one of Savage’s most successful early sporting rifles.
