Smith and Wesson Pre-Model 10 Nickle .38 Special
Smith and Wesson Pre-Model 10 Nickle .38 Special
This is a Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police (M&P) revolver, also known as a pre-Model 10, chambered in .38 Special.
It is a K-frame, 6-shot, double-action revolver from the long-running M&P line (introduced in 1899 and later designated Model 10 in 1957). These were extremely popular with law enforcement, military, and civilians due to their reliability, simplicity, and effectiveness.
Dating via Serial Number 628501 (No C Prefix)
Smith & Wesson serial numbers for K-frame .38 M&P revolvers in this era were shared across production and not always strictly sequential by ship date (some guns sat in inventory).
Non-C prefix (and non-S/V for war/post-war) places it firmly in the pre-WWII commercial production era.
Based on standard references (e.g., Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson and collector guides), serial numbers in the 550,001–630,000 range correspond roughly to 1927–1932 production.
Around 1927–1932: Checkered walnut grips became more standard; various "changes" to the Model of 1905 design included lockwork refinements, improved triggers/actions, and barrel markings.
Late 1930s examples (higher in the range or transitional) often show the large S&W trademark moved to the sideplate (around 1937).
