The Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 in .44 Magnum with an 8⅜-inch barrel is one of the most iconic versions of the classic “Dirty Harry” revolver.
Key details (29-2 specifically):
Model: Model 29-2 (the “-2” engineering change happened in 1961–1982)
Caliber: .44 Remington Magnum (also shoots .44 Special)
Barrel length: 8⅜ inches (the longest factory barrel offered on the Model 29 for many years; later replaced by 8⅜" pinned barrels being discontinued around 1980–1982)
Finish: Almost always blued (nickel was rare on 8⅜" guns)
Sights: Red ramp front, white outline adjustable rear
Grips: Target stocks (goncalo alves wood with S&W medallions) were standard
Pinning & Recessed cylinders: The 29-2 still has both the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder heads (these features were eliminated with the 29-3 in 1982)
Production period for 8⅜" 29-2: Roughly 1971–1980/81 (the 8⅜" length was phased out when S&W switched to the 29-3 and dropped the long barrel in favor of 6" and 10⅝" for a while)
This 29-2 was manufactured in 1975.
