Stevens Model 44½ Ideal .38-55 Single Shot Falling Block Rifle – Schuetzen Configuration

This is a beautiful example of one of Stevens’ finest falling-block single-shot rifles — the Model 44½, produced from approximately 1902 to 1916. Only around 13,000 of these were ever made, and they remain highly regarded for their strength, accuracy, and classic American target-shooting heritage. This particular rifle is chambered in the excellent .38-55 Winchester cartridge, a favorite for black powder and mild smokeless loads alike.

•  Action: Stevens Model 44½ falling block — smooth, strong, and famously forgiving when feeding cartridges. Action is tight 

•  Barrel: 28” length with a bright, excellent bore. Shows strong rifling with minimal wear. There is one very small, superficial area of surface rust (easily addressed with light cleaning if desired); otherwise the bore presents exceptionally well for a rifle of this age.

•  Triggers: Double set triggers — a hallmark of serious Schuetzen/target rifles. Crisp and adjustable for precise offhand or bench work.

•  Buttplate: Classic Schuetzen-style curved steel buttplate, providing a comfortable and traditional fit for target shooting.

•  Sights: Factory-style tang peep sight (adjustable) paired with a front sight — ideal setup for the period.

•  Stock: Attractive walnut with good color and grain. The pistol grip and forend show honest use but remain solid with attractive figure.

•  Overall Condition: Very good+ antique condition. Metal surfaces display a pleasing patina with some expected age-related wear. Wood is sound. A very shootable and display-worthy example of this iconic American single-shot.
