Percussion Lock | 35” Barrel
Antebellum Period
Scarce U.S. military percussion rifle manufactured by P. S. Justice, a Philadelphia arms maker known to have supplied military-contract and militia arms in the antebellum period. The lock is clearly marked “P.S. JUSTICE / PHILADA.”
This rifle reflects U.S. martial design, distinct from civilian Pennsylvania long rifles, and was intended for militia or military service, not sporting use.
Military Features:
- Original percussion lock marked P.S. JUSTICE / PHILADA
- 35-inch barrel, military length and profile
- Brass-mounted furniture throughout
- Original brass hinged patchbox
- Bottom-mounted sling swivels for military carry
- Walnut stock with correct martial architecture
- Pinned barrel with period sights
- Correct military ramrod present
Historical Context:
During the first half of the 19th century, Philadelphia makers such as P.S. Justice produced arms for state militia contracts and military supply, bridging the gap between early flintlock arms and standardized federal patterns. Rifles of this type represent an important pre–Civil War military transitional form.
Condition:
Metal surfaces show original patina with age and service wear. Stock remains solid with expected handling marks and no major structural issues noted. Lock markings are clear and legible. A well-preserved and honest example of an early American military percussion rifle.
