U.S. Model 1863 E. Robinson Contract Rifle-Musket – Civil War Union Contract
U.S. Model 1863 E. Robinson Contract Rifle-Musket – Civil War Union Contract
Offered here is an original Civil War-era U.S. Model 1863 rifle-musket manufactured under contract by E. Robinson of New York, one of the private contractors who supplied arms to the Union during the American Civil War.
The lock plate is clearly marked:
“E. ROBINSON – NEW YORK”
along with the American eagle motif and 1863 date, identifying the rifle as a Union contract musket produced during the height of Civil War arms production.
As the war expanded and the demand for arms grew dramatically, the U.S. government contracted numerous private manufacturers to supplement production from federal armories such as Springfield and Harpers Ferry. E. Robinson was among the contractors supplying rifle-muskets built to the standard U.S. military pattern.
This rifle follows the familiar configuration of the Springfield Model 1861 / 1863 style rifle-musket, chambered in .58 caliber and designed to fire the Minié ball projectile. These rifles became the standard infantry arm for Union soldiers throughout the conflict.
Features include:
• E. Robinson New York Civil War contract rifle-musket
• Lock plate dated 1863 with U.S. eagle marking
• .58 caliber rifled barrel
• Full-length walnut military stock
• Iron furniture and ramrod
• Standard percussion ignition system
• Three barrel bands with sling swivels
The rifle remains in good antique condition, showing an attractive aged patina on the metal surfaces with scattered oxidation consistent with historical use. The walnut stock remains solid with handling marks typical of a military firearm that is more than 160 years old.
Civil War contract muskets such as this were widely issued to Union infantry units and saw service across the many battlefields of the war. While not produced in the same quantities as Springfield Armory rifles, these contractor-made muskets represent an important part of the Union war effort.
Today they remain collectible examples of Civil War infantry arms and U.S. military history.
