U.S. Remington Model 1903A4 WWII Sniper Rifle – M73B1 Scope – September 1943

Offered here is an original U.S. Remington Model 1903A4 sniper rifle, one of the primary sniper weapons used by American forces during World War II. Built in 1943 at the Remington Arms plant, the 1903A4 represented a specialized sniper conversion of the Model 1903A3 service rifle and was produced in relatively limited numbers for precision shooting by U.S. Army snipers.

The Model 1903A4 differed from standard infantry rifles in several key ways. Receivers were specially selected for accuracy and then drilled and tapped for scope mounting, eliminating the use of iron sights. The bolt handle was turned down to clear the optic, and the rifles were fitted with military telescopic sights for precision shooting at extended ranges.

This example retains many of the correct features collectors look for in an original WWII sniper configuration.

The receiver is marked “U.S. Remington Model 03-A3” and bears serial number 2401455, placing production in the early period of 1903A4 manufacture during 1943. The rifle is fitted with a Remington barrel dated 9-43, an appropriate period barrel for this rifle and consistent with wartime production.

Mounted to the rifle is a correct U.S. M73B1 telescopic sight manufactured by Weaver of El Paso, Texas. The M73B1 was the standard early optical sight issued with many 1903A4 sniper rifles and is closely associated with American sniper use in the European and Pacific theaters. The scope retains its original military markings including:

“Telescope M73B1 – Weaver Co. – El Paso, Tex., U.S.A.”

The rifle features the characteristic bent bolt handle, designed to provide clearance for the mounted optic, along with the proper scope base and ring setup. These features are distinctive to the sniper variant and were not present on standard service rifles.

The rifle is fitted with a wartime Remington-produced stock bearing the correct FJA inspection cartouche, representing the mark of U.S. Army ordnance inspector Frank J. Atwood, whose stamp appears on many Remington-produced WWII rifles. Additional ordnance markings are present on the stock consistent with wartime inspection and acceptance.

Condition remains very good overall for a combat-era sniper rifle. The metal surfaces retain a pleasing military parkerized finish with honest service wear and light handling marks. The stock shows typical wartime use with scattered handling impressions but remains solid and attractive with clear inspection stamps. The scope remains properly mounted and complements the rifle well.

The Model 1903A4 served throughout World War II, seeing extensive use by American snipers in Europe, the Pacific, and later during the Korean War. Known for its accuracy and reliability, it remained a respected sniper platform even after the adoption of the M1 Garand as the primary U.S. service rifle.

With roughly 28,000 examples produced, surviving original sniper rifles remain highly sought after by collectors of U.S. military arms. Rifles retaining their correct sniper configuration with period optics are particularly desirable.

This is a classic example of the iconic American WWII sniper rifle and would make an excellent addition to any advanced U.S. military arms or WWII collection.
