Offered here is an original U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1922 M2 bolt-action target and training rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle, featuring a December 1935-dated Springfield Armory barrel, military markings, walnut stock, and adjustable rear aperture sight.

Developed from Springfield Armory’s Model 1922 series, the M2 represents an important chapter in American military marksmanship history. These rifles were designed for precision training using economical .22 rimfire ammunition while maintaining the quality and traditional characteristics of Springfield Armory military rifles.

This example retains its attractive military-style walnut stock, complete with visible inspection and cartouche markings. The barrel is marked SA 12-35 with the U.S. flaming bomb ordnance symbol.

The rifle is in good used condition, displaying normal handling marks, finish wear, and signs of age. The walnut stock presents nicely, with an attractive reddish-brown finish and honest service wear.

Please note: The receiver has unfortunately been drilled and tapped for scope mounting at some point in its history. This modification affects collector originality and has been considered in the overall condition assessment.

Historical Significance

Springfield Armory’s Model 1922 family was developed to provide American military personnel with accurate small-bore training rifles. The M2 was a refined version of the earlier design and remains of interest to collectors of U.S. military firearms, Springfield Armory rifles, and American marksmanship history.

The December 1935 barrel marking is a particularly desirable period detail. Although this example has been modified for optics, it retains many of the visual and historical characteristics associated with these military target rifles.

A very interesting piece of American military marksmanship history.
