U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1884 Rod Bayonet (1888 Pattern) Trapdoor Rifle
U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1884
Rod Bayonet (1888 Pattern) Trapdoor Rifle
Serial #563209 – 1891 Production
Caliber .45-70 Government
Original U.S. Military Rifle featuring the desirable Round Rod Bayonet system (adopted in 1888). Unlike earlier trapdoors with a simple cleaning rod, this rifle’s heavy steel rod locks forward via a spring-release mechanism and functions as a bayonet — representing the final and most advanced evolution of the Trapdoor design.
Receiver correctly marked “Model 1884,” as issued.
✔ Correct Buffington rear sight
✔ Strong “SWP / 1891” cartouche
✔ Excellent, bright bore with strong rifling
✔ Honest original finish and patina
✔ Sharp wood edges – no heavy sanding
Rod bayonet rifles were produced for a relatively short period and are significantly scarcer than standard 1884 rifles. Even more uncommon are examples retaining original finish, crisp cartouches, and solid mechanical integrity.
This rifle represents a well-preserved, late-production Springfield Armory example in increasingly hard-to-find collector condition.
