U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor .45-70 – Antique – Sporterized/Cut-Down – Shooter Grade

Original U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle chambered in .45-70 Government. This is an antique military rifle that was modified sometime during its life into a shorter, handier sporting configuration. Both the barrel and original military stock have been cut down, so this is best viewed as an affordable shooter-grade Trapdoor rather than a collector-grade military example.

The lock plate is clearly marked “U.S. Springfield” with the eagle motif, and the rifle retains the classic side-hinged Trapdoor breech system, external hammer, rear sight, and barrel-band arrangement. The walnut stock shows normal age, handling marks, scratches, small dings, and wear expected from a rifle of this age and one that has been altered and used. Metal surfaces have aged to an attractive dark gray/brown patina with scattered wear and spotting.

Because the barrel and stock have both been shortened, much of the collector premium associated with an untouched Model 1884 is gone, but that also makes this a good candidate for someone looking for an original 19th-century Springfield at a more approachable price.
