U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle – .45-70 Government
U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle – .45-70 Government
This is an original U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle chambered in the legendary .45-70 Government cartridge. Adopted during the closing years of the Indian Wars, the Model 1884 represents the final evolution of the iconic Trapdoor Springfield series and remains one of the most historically significant U.S. military rifles ever produced.
This rifle retains an excellent overall appearance for its age, with an attractive, honest military patina and a solid walnut stock showing only expected service wear. The lockplate is correctly marked “U.S. Springfield” with the federal eagle, while the receiver is stamped “U.S. Model 1884.” The original Buffington rear sight remains in place, one of the defining features of the 1884 pattern.
Most importantly, the rifle boasts an excellent bore, making it far better than many surviving examples. The action operates properly and the rifle presents as a very attractive collector-grade military arm.
The only notable issue is the missing front sight, which is reflected in the asking price. Replacement sights are available to collectors who wish to complete the rifle while preserving its originality.
