WWII German Feldpost Letter& Envelope-Artillery Replacement Battalion 13-April 1942

Original WWII German military Feldpost correspondence consisting of a two-page handwritten letter and its matching envelope, dated April 20–21, 1942.

The envelope is particularly desirable because it retains a strong blue military unit stamp featuring the German national eagle and swastika. The stamp appears to read “Art. Ers. Abt. 13”, identifying the sender with Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 13 (Artillery Replacement Battalion 13). This provides a much stronger military attribution than an ordinary unidentified Feldpost letter.

The envelope is prominently marked “Feldpost” and bears a clear Deutsche Dienstpost Böhmen-Mähren postal cancellation dated 21.4.42. This is significant postal-history material from the German occupation of Bohemia and Moravia, today part of the Czech Republic. The handwritten address appears to be to Münchberg, Germany.

The accompanying letter is dated 20 April 1942, one day before the postal cancellation, confirming that the letter and envelope belong together. It consists of two large, densely handwritten pages in period German cursive and is a personal letter home. The writer discusses his current circumstances, family and acquaintances, correspondence and everyday military life. The letter closes affectionately with “Es grüßt u. küßt dich herzlich, dein Richard!” — approximately, “Heartfelt greetings and kisses, your Richard!”

Of particular collector interest is the combination of the complete original letter, matching Feldpost envelope, identifiable artillery unit stamp, occupation-era Bohemia-Moravia postal cancellation, and precise April 1942 dating. Together they provide a well-documented piece of personal German military and postal history from the middle of WWII.

Condition is good for its age. The letter retains strong, legible handwriting with its original mailing folds. The envelope shows expected age toning, foxing/staining, edge and handling wear, but the important unit and postal markings remain remarkably strong and attractive.
