WWII German Kuban Campaign Shield Style Commemorative Badge
WWII German Kuban Campaign Shield Style Commemorative Badge
The Kuban Campaign Shield (Kuban-Schild) is one of the most recognizable German campaign awards of the Second World War, instituted on September 21, 1943 to commemorate service during the defense of the Kuban Bridgehead on the Eastern Front. Approximately 50,000 personnel qualified for the award, making it scarcer than some other campaign shields while remaining highly collectible today.
This example features the classic design with the Wehrmacht eagle above the date 1943, the bold “KUBAN” banner, and the stylized map highlighting the key locations Lagunen, Krymskaja, and Noworossijsk. Originally, these shields were mounted to a cloth backing matching the recipient’s branch of service and sewn to the upper left sleeve of the uniform. This example is offered as the metal shield only, with its original attachment tabs still intact on the reverse.
The shield displays attractive age-related patina and honest wear that give it an authentic period appearance. The reverse retains the original mounting tabs, while the cloth backing is no longer present—a common occurrence with examples that have been removed from uniforms over the decades.
A desirable addition for collectors of WWII German militaria, Eastern Front artifacts, or campaign awards, this Kuban Shield is an excellent display piece representing one of the Wehrmacht’s officially authorized combat campaign decorations.
