Consecutive Serial Numbered Pair-WWII Japanese Military Currency-One Yen Notes
Consecutive Serial Numbered Pair-WWII Japanese Military Currency-One Yen Notes
This offering consists of an original matched pair of Series 100 Japanese Military Currency One Yen notes issued during the Second World War by the Imperial Japanese military for circulation in occupied territories throughout East and Southeast Asia.
What makes this pair especially desirable is that the notes retain consecutive serial numbers:
- A01552651A
- A01552652A
Consecutive serial number pairs are significantly more difficult to locate than individual notes because they were often separated during circulation over the past 80 years. Matching pairs are highly sought after by military currency and paper money collectors and display exceptionally well together.
The face of each note features the denomination “One Yen” in English, Japanese characters, ornate guilloché engraving, and the inscription “Military Currency.” The reverse bears an elaborate ornamental design with the bilingual inscription:
“Issued Pursuant to Military Proclamation.”
Unlike standard Bank of Japan currency, these notes were produced exclusively for military use in territories under Japanese occupation during World War II. Following Japan’s surrender in 1945, all military currency was withdrawn, making surviving examples important artifacts of the Pacific Theater.
Condition
- Original WWII Japanese military currency
- Matching consecutive serial numbers
- Crisp, well-preserved paper
- Bright original color
- Sharp printing and strong eye appeal
- No major tears, repairs, or missing pieces observed
- Light natural aging only
Overall, this is an excellent collector-grade matched pair.
Historical Significance
Japanese Military Currency (JIM) was issued by the Imperial Japanese Army to support military operations and administer occupied territories throughout the Pacific War. Because these notes were intended for circulation outside Japan and were invalidated after the war, surviving consecutive serial number sets are considerably scarcer than individual examples.
Matched pairs such as these are especially desirable for advanced collectors because they demonstrate their original distribution sequence and are rarely kept together over decades of circulation and collecting.
Perfect For
- WWII military collections
- Imperial Japanese artifacts
- Pacific Theater displays
- World paper money collections
- Advanced military currency collectors
