Original 1865 Abraham Lincoln General Orders No. 35 – Civil War Presidential Proclamation Pardoning Deserters

Authentic original Civil War-period War Department printing of General Orders No. 35, issued from the Adjutant General’s Office in Washington on March 11, 1865.

This historic order reproduces President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation addressing military deserters during the final weeks of the Civil War. Lincoln offered deserters an opportunity to return to their commands within the stated period and receive a presidential pardon under the conditions outlined in the proclamation.

The two-page government printing bears the printed names of President Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of State William H. Seward, and Assistant Adjutant General E. D. Townsend. These are printed names as originally issued and are not handwritten signatures.

Dated just over one month before Lincoln’s assassination, this is an outstanding original piece of Lincoln and Civil War history with strong display appeal. The document has been examined and confirmed authentic. It is currently professionally displayed in a decorative frame and shows age-appropriate toning and wear consistent with an original 1865 document.

A desirable addition to any Abraham Lincoln, Civil War, presidential, or U.S. military history collection.
