Vintage Early 20th Century Wooden Police Billy Club/Nightstick
Vintage Early 20th Century Wooden Police Billy Club/Nightstick
Offered is an attractive vintage wooden police-style billy club or nightstick, displaying classic early law-enforcement/security baton construction.
The club is turned from a substantial piece of hardwood and features a long, heavy rounded striking body transitioning into a distinctive deeply grooved/ringed hand grip. The handle terminates in a pronounced rounded pommel intended to provide a secure grip.
A particularly nice original feature is the surviving leather wrist strap/thong, although the leather is heavily aged and partially deteriorated. Wrist straps were commonly incorporated into traditional wooden police truncheons to help retain the baton while carried or in use.
The wood retains an attractive old amber/brown finish with considerable evidence of age and handling. There are numerous scratches, scuffs, finish losses, small dents, discoloration and general surface wear. Both ends show considerably more wear, as would be expected from decades of handling and storage.
No manufacturer, police-department number, badge, crest, initials or other identifying markings are visible in the supplied photographs. Because of this, the precise department and date of issue cannot presently be established.
Based upon its traditional construction and configuration, this is best described conservatively as an early-to-mid 20th-century wooden police/security billy club or nightstick.
A great display piece for a collection of vintage law-enforcement equipment, police memorabilia, Americana or early security equipment.
Condition: Good original used condition with considerable age-related wear, scratches, finish loss and handling marks. Leather wrist thong is incomplete/deteriorated. No restoration apparent from the photographs. Please see photographs for exact condition.
