Vintage German Neue Sparkasse von 1864 Bank Account ID Card-Hamburg-1974
Vintage German Neue Sparkasse von 1864 Bank Account ID Card-Hamburg-1974
This is an interesting piece of German banking ephemera from Hamburg. The front identifies Neue Sparkasse von 1864 and reads “Ausweis für Kontogegenbuch,” essentially an identification/authorization card used together with an account passbook. The card bears handwritten account information, signatures, and a dated bank stamp. The visible stamp appears to read 2 Nov. 1974.
There is an important historical wrinkle: Neue Sparkasse von 1864 merged with Hamburger Sparkasse in 1972. Archival references confirm that the institution was absorbed into what became Hamburger Sparkasse, so a card carrying the older Neue Sparkasse name but a 1974 stamp is a neat transitional/post-merger survivor.

Recommended price: $19.95
Offered here is an original vintage German banking identification card from the historic Neue Sparkasse von 1864, a Hamburg savings bank established in the 19th century.
The card is titled:
“Ausweis für Kontogegenbuch”
This translates approximately to “Identification Card for Account Passbook” and would have been presented together with the customer’s savings/account book when conducting banking business.
The front features the circular Neue Sparkasse von 1864 emblem, printed account information, handwritten entries and signatures, along with a purple bank/date stamp that appears to be dated 2 November 1974.
Printed instructions at the bottom state that the account book and identification card were to be presented together and that loss of the card was to be reported to the savings bank immediately.
The reverse is largely blank apart from the printed number:
69074
Historical Background
Neue Sparkasse von 1864 was a historic Hamburg financial institution. It operated independently until its merger with the Hamburger Sparcasse von 1827 in 1972, creating the modern Hamburger Sparkasse organization.
Because this example bears a 1974 banking stamp, it is especially interesting as evidence of older Neue Sparkasse-branded materials apparently continuing in use after the merger.
Condition
Good vintage used condition.
The card displays:
- Original handwritten banking entries
- Period signatures
- Purple bank/date stamp
- Light surface staining and age toning
- Minor edge and corner wear
- Small handling marks
