Large vintage maritime signal flag representing the letter “D” (Delta) in the International Code of Signals.

The flag is constructed from sewn yellow and dark blue fabric panels in the correct traditional yellow-blue-yellow configuration. The Delta signal is used internationally to indicate:

“Keep clear of me; I am maneuvering with difficulty.”

This example has excellent original character and retains its heavy canvas hoist, attached rope, and turned wooden toggle used for securing the flag to a shipboard signal halyard. The canvas edge shows faded stenciled markings, including what appears to be a “D” designation and additional size or issue markings.

The flag has the look of an older working maritime piece rather than a modern decorative reproduction. It shows honest age and use, including scattered staining, spotting, wrinkles, light fabric wear, discoloration to the canvas hoist, and some fraying to the rope. The colors remain strong overall, and the flag displays extremely well.

Exact age and issuing service are unknown. While the construction is consistent with older naval and commercial maritime signal flags, this example is not being represented as confirmed WWII U.S. Navy issue without a clearly readable dated or contract marking.

A very attractive display piece for a nautical, naval, maritime, signal flag, or military collection.
