Winchester Model 1886 saddle ring carbine in .40-65 WCF, serial number 144631.

Cody Firearms Museum letter confirms original configuration: Type – Carbine, Caliber – 40/65. Received in warehouse November 2, 1908 and shipped November 3, 1908 on order number 179832.

Metal has been reblued. The blue is even and attractive with light wear on the high edges and contact points. Receiver, barrel, magazine tube, and lever show a solid working finish. Saddle ring is present on the left side of the receiver. Barrel is marked “40-65 W.C.F.” with the standard Winchester address and patent dates.

Wood is dark walnut with the expected handling marks, scratches, and dings from age and use, but remains solid with good color and no major cracks or repairs. Forearm and buttstock fit properly.

Comes with 10 full boxes of PMC factory .40-65 Winchester 260 grain lead flat point ammunition.

A classic late-production 1886 carbine with documentation and a solid supply of correct ammo included. Ready for the collection or the field.

Approximately 6,223 Winchester Model 1886 saddle ring carbines were made.

Out of the total production of roughly 159,994–160,000 Model 1886s (1886–1935), only about 6,223 were carbines. That works out to roughly 4% of total production.

This figure comes from research by John Madl (and later surveys of the Cody Firearms Museum records) and is the number most commonly cited by collectors, auction houses, and publications like American Rifleman. Some more recent tallies of verified records put the number a bit higher (around 6,650–6,660), but 6,223 remains the standard accepted total.

George Madis famously called the Model 1886 carbine “one of the rarest carbines in the Winchester line,”
