WWI Goerz Trieder Binocle “Pernox” 6x30 Binoculars with Custom Huet & Cie Case
For sale is a remarkable piece of WWI military history: a pair of Goerz Trieder Binocle “Pernox” 6x30 binoculars, complete with their original leather case made by Huet & Cie. These binoculars, bearing the serial number 99461, date to approximately 1912–1915, placing them firmly in the WWI era. Manufactured by C.P. Goerz in Berlin, a leading German optical company, they are engraved with “F. Pernox - Binocle D.R.P.” and “C.P. Goerz, Berlin,” reflecting their patented Trieder design and German craftsmanship.
The binoculars feature a classic porro-prism design with 6x magnification and 30mm objective lenses, ideal for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, or navigation—key tasks for officers during WWI. Constructed from brass with a leather covering, they exhibit a beautiful patina and wear consistent with over a century of history, adding to their authentic wartime character.
The accompanying leather case, made by Huet & Cie of Paris, is a rare and fascinating addition. Inscribed with “Société Anonyme des Anciens Établissements HUET & CIE ET JUMELLES FLAMMARION, FOURNISSEUR DES MINISTÈRES DE LA GUERRE ET DE LA MARINE, 14 RUE DU TEMPLE PARIS,” the case indicates these binoculars were supplied to the French military, likely before the outbreak of WWI when French and German optical companies still collaborated. The case appears to be custom-made for this specific pair, with its interior shape and small ledges conforming precisely to the curve of the binoculars, ensuring a snug and secure fit.
This unique combination of German binoculars and a French military case tells a story of pre-WWI European collaboration, making this set a standout piece for collectors of military antiques, optical instruments, or WWI memorabilia. The binoculars and case show signs of field use, with scratches and scuffs that enhance their historical authenticity, though the optics may benefit from a gentle cleaning to restore clarity.
Don’t miss this opportunity to own a tangible piece of WWI history, likely used on the Western Front by French forces. Perfect for display or as a centerpiece in any military collection.
