WWI Imperial Germany “GOTT MIT UNS” Hammered Metal Cigarette Case

Original period Imperial German patriotic cigarette case featuring a prominent “Gott Mit Uns” medallion and Imperial crown. The German phrase translates to “God With Us” and is one of the best-known mottos associated with the Imperial German and Prussian military.

The case is constructed of a silver-colored metal with an attractive hammered finish covering both the exterior and interior surfaces. The front features an applied circular medallion displaying the Imperial crown surrounded by a wreath and the “GOTT MIT UNS” inscription.

The case opens on a full-length side hinge and retains its interior woven retaining straps used to secure cigarettes. The clasp and hinge mechanism are also present. Construction details, extensive age patina, and overall appearance are consistent with an early 20th-century piece.

The case remains in good antique condition with honest wear from age and use. There is oxidation, darkening, staining, surface wear and scattered marks throughout, particularly on the interior. The original patina has been left intact and the piece has not been polished.

No maker or silver-content hallmark has been located, so we are conservatively describing the material simply as metal rather than sterling or coin silver. This appears to have been a privately purchased patriotic/personal item rather than an officially issued piece of military equipment.
