WWII 1944 Restricted RADAR Magazine No. 5 USAAF Confidential SCR-584 Buzz Bomb

Original World War II U.S. Army Air Forces RADAR publication, Number 5, dated September 30, 1944, issued through the Office of the Air Communications Officer.

This is an especially interesting wartime radar intelligence/technical publication. It was originally security-classified RESTRICTED, with the pictured copy also bearing period CONFIDENTIAL markings. The cover features a dramatic radar mosaic of the Mediterranean—including Corsica, Elba, Genoa, Nice, Cannes and La Spezia—connected with Allied operations in Southern France.

The contents shown are outstanding and include articles on the SCR-584 radar, defense against German V-1 “Buzz Bombs,” radar support of ground forces, radar development, radar bombing, the war against German U-boats, IFF, anti-jamming, radar reconnaissance, and the Allied invasion of Southern France.

One particularly noteworthy article, “The 584 Earns Its Keep,” describes the SCR-584’s use against German V-1 flying bombs. The publication also contains wartime radar photographs, diagrams and operational information that was sensitive when originally issued.

The copy displays period military ownership/administrative markings and handwritten annotations, adding provenance and character.
