WWII German 1944 “Lernt Deutschland Kennen!”-Erlangen Postcard-Hitler Stamp-Feldpost Era

Original Third Reich-era German postal card mailed during WWII and postmarked 21 October 1944. This is an especially interesting wartime example because it remains used, written, stamped, and clearly dated during the final months of the war.

The front carries the patriotic/tourism slogan “Lernt Deutschland kennen!” (“Get to know Germany!”) and an inset photograph of Erlangen, identified beneath the image as “Erlangen, die fränkische Universität”. The caption describes the Orangery and Huguenot Fountain in the palace gardens and references nearby Nürnberg as the city of the Nazi Party rallies (“Stadt der Reichsparteitage, Nürnberg”). The photograph is credited to J. Keller, Erlangen.

The card retains its original 6-pfennig Deutsches Reich Adolf Hitler definitive stamp, which is tied to the card by a strong circular Freiburg cancellation dated 21.10.44. The postal markings and wartime date give this substantially more historical interest than an unused tourist postcard.

The reverse contains a lengthy handwritten message in period German script. Although portions are faded and difficult to decipher, the extensive original correspondence remains present, making this a worthwhile research piece. It appears to have been written during the wartime period rather than being a later addition.

An excellent piece of original WWII German postal history combining several desirable elements: a 1944 wartime cancellation, Hitler postage stamp, Third Reich-era Nürnberg/Reichsparteitag reference, Erlangen imagery, and extensive handwritten correspondence.

Condition is fair to good considering its age and wartime use. The card shows overall toning, staining/soiling, rounded and worn corners, edge wear, creasing and small edge tears. The handwriting on the reverse has faded considerably but remains partially legible. The Hitler stamp is intact and the Freiburg postmark remains particularly clear.
