Offered is an original WWII German Black Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz), one of the most recognizable combat awards issued by Germany during the Second World War.

The badge features a steel combat helmet bearing the national emblem over crossed swords, all enclosed within an oval laurel wreath. Instituted in 1939, the Black Grade was awarded to military personnel wounded once or twice as a result of enemy action.

This example displays attractive age-related patina and retains sharp detail throughout the wreath, helmet, and crossed swords. The reverse retains its original pin-back attachment system and presents well for display.

The Black Wound Badge was awarded to members of the Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, Waffen-SS, and other eligible military personnel who suffered combat wounds during wartime service. It remains one of the cornerstone awards sought by collectors of German WWII militaria.

Historical Background

The Wound Badge was originally instituted during World War I and reauthorized in 1939 for WWII service. The Black Grade recognized soldiers wounded one or two times in combat, while Silver and Gold grades were awarded for additional wounds or severe injuries. Millions were awarded during the war, making it one of Germany’s most widely issued combat decorations.
