WWII German Civil Defense Medal

“Luftschutz Ehrenzeichen” 

It was instituted by Adolf Hitler on January 30, 1938. 

The first class award was bestowed for exceptional service in the field of air raid protection. 

The inscription around the central swastika reads “Fur Verdienste im Luftschutz” ( “For Meritorious Service in Air Defense”) 

the reverse side of the medal is embossed with the institution date, “1938”.
