Offered is an original WWII German Eastern Front Medal, commonly known as the Ostmedaille or “Frozen Meat Medal,” awarded to German military personnel who served during the harsh winter campaign on the Eastern Front between 1941 and 1942.

The obverse features the national eagle above a swastika, while the reverse bears the inscription “WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42” (Winter Battle in the East 1941/42) above a crossed sword and branch motif. The medal retains its original suspension ring and period-style ribbon displaying the distinctive red field with black and white center stripes.

Instituted on May 26, 1942, this award was presented to soldiers who endured combat operations under the brutal conditions of the Russian winter and remains one of the most recognizable German campaign medals of the Second World War.

This example displays an attractive aged patina with clear detail on both sides. The ribbon remains attached and presents well for display.
