Original World War II German postal envelope mailed from Berlin-Charlottenburg during the height of the Second World War. The envelope bears a 12 Reichspfennig Deutsches Reich stamp and a clearly dated Berlin-Charlottenburg postmark of July 22, 1941, placing it just one month after the start of Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa). The envelope also has a receiving postmark on the reverse, documenting its successful delivery.

The front is handwritten in period German script and addressed to:

Frau Hedwig Zimmermann
Johannisstraße
Greifswald (address partially obscured but appears consistent with the city)

The original 12 Pfennig stamp remains intact with a crisp cancellation. The envelope has never been cleaned or restored and retains its original folds, postal wear, and age toning.

Condition:

  • Original WWII-era mailed envelope
  • Dated 22 July 1941
  • Berlin-Charlottenburg circular postal cancellation
  • Original 12 Reichspfennig stamp attached
  • Reverse arrival/postal marking
  • Typical age toning, edge wear, and minor creasing
  • No major tears affecting display

Historical Significance:

This is an authentic piece of wartime German postal history from the summer of 1941, a pivotal period of the war. Postal history from Berlin during this era is collected both for its historical context and for the well-preserved postal markings. The 12 Pfennig adhesive is one of the official Deutsches Reich postal issues used during the war years.

This envelope would make an excellent addition to any WWII German postal history, paper ephemera, or home front collection. It also pairs well with wartime letters, photographs, and other Berlin-related artifacts from the same period.
