This is an original German Eastern Front medal, officially awarded for service during the harsh winter campaign on the Eastern Front between 1941-1942. Instituted by Adolf Hitler on 26 may 1942, it recognized soldiers who endured extreme combat conditions against Soviet force.
Features German national eagle clutching a wreath with swastika, above crossed weapons symbolizing military service. “Winter Battle in the East 1941/1942”.
Ribbon: Red with Narrow White and Black center stripes, symbolizing blood sacrifice (red), snow and winter( White), and mourning/fallen soldiers (black).
Material: Zinc Alloy, typical wartime issue.
Historical Significance:
Awarded to Wehrmacht personnel who served at least: 14 days in combat, 60 days in the operational zone, or were wounded/frostbitten during the campaign.
Often referred to by soldiers as the “Frozen Meat Medal” due to the brutal winter conditions.
