Constructed of dark blue wool/felt with a large embroidered insignia featuring orange/gold wings surrounding a white circular center marked “U.S. ARMY – AWS – AIR FORCE.” The word “OBSERVER” is embroidered prominently beneath.

These armbands were worn by civilian volunteers serving with the Aircraft Warning Service, part of the American home-front air-defense network during World War II. AWS observers staffed lookout posts, identified aircraft, and reported their movements to military control centers in an effort to detect possible enemy activity.

This is an attractive and highly recognizable piece of WWII U.S. Army Air Forces and home-front history.

Condition is very good overall. The blue felt retains strong color and the embroidery remains bright and well defined. There is some light surface lint, minor spotting, and normal age/storage wear. No major damage is apparent from the photographs. Please review photos closely for exact condition.

A nice example for a WWII aviation, Army Air Forces, civil defense, or home-front collection.
