The Navy Model FRA was developed to adapt standard Navy communications receivers for frequency-shift keying (FSK) reception, allowing reliable reception of high-speed radioteletype (RTTY) and other frequency-shift communications used extensively by the U.S. Navy during and immediately after World War II. These specialized communications manuals are increasingly sought after by collectors of naval communications, cryptographic, and early electronic equipment.
